BBC - Africa Rising with Afua Hirsch (2023)

Africa on its own terms and in full voice - across Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa. Uncovering the energy and ambition of creatives reinventing African music, fashion and film.

Chapter 1 Morocco

Africa's most popular tourist destination, famous for mosques, medinas and, more recently, football. But now, Afua Hirsch goes beyond the clich?s to explore how Morocco is changing. She gets the inside track from young creatives who are updating traditions, expressing new ideas and connecting Morocco to wider African culture with thrilling new art forms.

She is snapped by internationally renowned photographer Hassan Hajjaj, goes riding with Tbourida horse rider Amal Amhari and explores Amazigh rug weaving with artist Sarah Allaoui. Afua also looks into the tensions between heritage, tradition and the desire for change with pioneering women artists Majida Khattari and Zainab Fasiki and Morocco's superstar singer-songwriter Rym Fikri.

Chapter 2 Nigeria

Africa's largest economy and home to over a sixth of the continent's inhabitants, Afua Hirsch explores the energy and ambition of a country at the epicentre of African music, fashion and film.

In her search for what she calls Nigeria's 'secret sauce' - the drive of Nigerians to be the best at everything they do - she explores the impact of adversity, competition and education with cutting-edge contemporary artists, including Afrobeats legend Made Kuti, rapper Falz the Bahd Guy, sculptor Yinka Shonibare and Nollywood star Jemima Osunde.

Chapter 3 South Africa

Once notorious for racial segregation under the apartheid regime, Afua Hirsch finds a country in transition, with a new creativity emerging from the roots up in the townships as the once-oppressed reclaim their art scene. She explores how far this process is driven by what locals call 'ekasi', the street-cool of the townships.
